Registration, deregistration at the "Bürgeramt" „Anmeldung/Abmeldung“)

Registration of your new residence. Prerequisite for many other formalities such as opening a bank account, e.g. for your employer to transfer your salary, making various applications for benefits such as child allowance (“Kindergeld”).
In Germany there is an obligation to register your habitual residence within the first 2 weeks after entering the country (Meldepflicht). This is the famous “Anmeldung”, which is done in one of the more than 40 citizen service offices in the city.
If you are officially registered as a Berlin resident, you will receive your personal identification number (tax identification number) - for employment purposes, among other things.

Take out insurance

Otherwise there are two types of insurance that many Germans take out and which are especially useful for new homes.

Liability insurance:

Liability insurance protects you if you damage or destroy someone else's property. These types of damage may be covered by liability insurance

Home insurance:

This insurance is mainly intended for movable household objects. With home insurance, you are in most cases covered against damage caused by fire, running water, storms, theft, burglary, theft, etc.

Assistance with filling out forms and applying for the desired insurance
Support during the contract signing process)

Change of tax class

As a registered spouse/partner, you can apply to the tax office once a year for a more favourable income tax class combination (IV/IV to III/V or vice versa).

Dog ownership - registering your dog in the dog register

If you have a dog permanently in Berlin, you must register it in the central register (dog register).

The dog register is used, among other things, for the identification of dogs or to determine the last owner of stray dogs or the last owner of unowned dogs.

Register your dog when you start keeping it or deregister your dog due to death of the dog, loss of the dog or termination of the dog's ownership. Or make a notification of change, e.g. if you move house.

Application for the ‘Bürgergeld’ citizens' allowance at the Job Center

Citizen's allowance ‘Bürgergeld’:

If you apply for citizen's income benefit (‘Bürgergeld’), your employment office (“Job Center”) will need information from you. On the basis of the information you provide, the “Job Centre” will check whether you meet the requirements for citizens' income support and are therefore entitled to it. If so, the Job Centre will also determine the amount of citizenship allowance you are entitled to in principle.

Factors influencing the decision:

You have no income or a low income.
You have children or are a single parent, live alone or with other people.

Important: If you live with other people in a benefit community, you must apply for all of them. In this case, you must therefore provide information about all members of your benefit community (“Bedarfsgemeinschaft“). In this case, you are the representative of your benefit community. Important: you will be asked to provide a full statement for the last 6 months for each of the accounts you have, including bank accounts in any country in the world, credit card(s), PayPal and the like.

If you were employed and subject to social insurance contributions for at least 12 months in the 30 months prior to becoming unemployed, you are entitled to ALG1 for an average of one year.

Housing benefit (“Wohngeld”)– apply for rent subsidy

Citizens on low incomes can receive this subsidy for their housing costs from the state.
However, you do not receive housing benefit automatically; you must apply for it. Housing benefit is available as a rent subsidy for tenants of owner-occupied housing.
You can use the housing benefit calculator to work out for yourself whether you are entitled to housing benefit, with no obligation.

Application for additional child allowance (“Kinderzuschlag”)

The child supplement is a benefit for families on low incomes. Parents can only receive the child supplement if they earn enough for themselves, but their income is not sufficient or only just sufficient for their entire family.You must meet the following basic requirements to be eligible for the child supplement:

You receive child benefit
Your gross monthly income reaches the minimum income threshold
Your children live in your household and are under 25 years of age
Your children are unmarried

Application for education and participation benefits for recipients of housing allowance and/or child supplement

Benefits for education and participation include subsidies or cost coverage for:

Day trips, school and daycare trips, group lunches, sports, culture and leisure activities, learning support, personal school supplies.

You will receive the "berlinpass-BuT" as proof of eligibility for these benefits.

Requirements:

Children, adolescents, and young adults up to their 25th birthday
Simultaneous receipt of benefits (such as social assistance, benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act, unemployment benefit II or social assistance, housing allowance, child supplement, or comparable low income)
